Guidelines to Authors

Interested users can download the instructions for authors as rtf files (MS Word) or pdf (Acrobat Reader)

The Società Entomologica Italiana publishes original scientific contributions on Arthropoda, specifically on terrestrial and fresh water fauna, presented by the members of the Society, upon a favourable judgement by the Editorial Committee and by the Referees. Articles by non-members of the Society may be accepted if considered of particular interest. Papers should be sent, via E-mail or on CD.ROM to Dr Giulio Gardini – Redazione S.E.I., c/o Dip.Te.Ris, Università degli Studi di Genova, Corso Europa 26, I-16132 Genova, Italy; e-mail giuliogardini@libero.it
Articles accepted will be published free of charge, with the exception of colour plates. The authors will receive 50 free copies of the article and a copy on CD-Rom in .PDF format. Requests for additional copies will be at the author’s expense.

GENERAL RULES–

Text: should be clear and concise. The article should follow the format: author/s, title, abstract in Italian, abstract in English, key words, text, acknowledgements, bibliography, address/es of author/s, figures captions, figures.

Languages accepted: Italian, English, French, German, Spanish.

Indications: use the symbols $, # and £ only to indicate male, female and worker respectively. Do not write entire words in capital letters, use cursive for the taxa at a genus and species level, avoid footnotes as far as possible. Number the figures progressively without using letters.

Delivery: via e-mail or on CD-Rom or DVD. In case, tables of drawings and photos will be send in original.

Authors who wish to publish in a language other than own should have the grammar and syntax checked by an export, preferably a zoologist, who should be mentioned in the acknowledgements.

Manuscripts which do not conform to the above rules will be returned to the author/s for adjustment before being reviewed.

After the article has been accepted, the author/s should send the final version via e-mail or on CD-Rom plus any original figures not in computer format. The cost of eventual modifications to the text or figures will be billed to the author/s.

GUIDELINES–

Title: should be concise and explicitly state the argument of the paper. It should include the family dealt with and the highest taxon without punctuation. The author and year of the description of names of taxa cited in the title are not normally indicated.

Abstracts: a third abstract, in the language of the text, may be included when the text is not written in Italian or English.

Nomenclature: should follow the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (latest edition) and the opinions published by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature. The names of taxa should be followed by the unabbreviated name of the author and the year of the description when the name is used for the first time in the text.

Descriptions of new species: the following scheme should be followed: diagnosis, type locality of the taxon, complete data on the material of the type series (paying particular attention to recommendations 16C and 72F of the ICZN regarding the storage and preservation of types of new species), description, comparisons, any other data.

Chapter titles: aligned with the left margin.

Section titles: aligned with the left margin, followed by a full stop and the text on the same line.

Graphics, designs, photographs: should be cited as figures, in both the text and the legends (e.g.: Fig. 3; Figs 3-6). The figures should be presented in figures with height:width dimensions not exceeding 3:2. The depiction of animals or parts thereof should be to scale with reference to the actual size. The specimen depicted and its provenance should be indicated.

Figures captions: should follow the schemes below:
a) Fig. 1. Parabathyscia (P.) fiorii Capra, holotype $: habitat. b) Figs 2-5. Parabathyscia (P.) fiorii Capra ($; Firenze: Fiesole): 2 - aedeagus, dorsal view; 3 - idem, lateral view; 4 - apex of right paramere; 5 - antenna.

Bibliographical references in the text: should be cited, according to the situation, as in the following examples: Binaghi (1951); (Binaghi, 1951); (Binaghi, 1951a, 1951b; Capra, 1958); (Binaghi, 1951: 18); (Binaghi & Capra, 1951); (Binaghi et al., 1951).

Bibliography: should only contain the details of the publications cited in the text and the titles should be given in full, as in the following examples:
Binaghi G., 1974 - Il Troglophloeus siculus Rey nel Lazio. Ecologia e nuovi caratteri diagnostici (Coleoptera Staphylinidae). Bollettino della Società entomologica italiana, 106 (3-4): 49-53.
Binaghi G., 1951 - Coleotteri d’Italia. Vita, ambienti, utilità, danni, mezzi di lotta. Briano, Genova, 210 pp.
Mohr K. H., 1966 - 88. Familie: Chrysomelidae, pp. 95-299. In: H. Freude, K. W. Harde & G. A. Lohse (eds.). Die Käfer Mitteleuropas, 9, Goecke & Evers, Krefeld.
Ciceroni A., Puthz V. & Zanetti A., 1995 - Coleoptera Polyphaga III (Staphylinidae), 65 pp. In: A. Minelli, S. Ruffo & S. La Posta (eds). Checklist delle specie della fauna italiana, 48, Calderini, Bologna.

Titles of publications originally written in languages with non-Latin alphabets: should be transliterated or, better, translated into English with an indication (in parenthesis) of the original language from which they were translated.

ITALIAN FAUNISTIC RECORDS–

Only contributions containing significant new information of real interest for the understanding of the distribution of single taxa are accepted. They should be sent to Dr Giulio Gardini by e-mail: giuliogardini@libero.it

These should summarise the information in the following order: Species (Family Order); - Nomenclatural reference: the publication on which the interpretation of the taxon is based; - Context: the reason for the indication; - Findings: locality, date, collector, determiner, collection in which the specimens are housed, any information on the habitat; - Observations: general distribution of the taxon based on the indications of the chorological category to which the specimen belongs, known distribution in Italy with abbreviated bibliographical references, other complementary observations; author and address.

Activities and short History of the Società Entomologica Italiana

The Società Entomologica Italiana, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious scientific societies, was established in 1869 and hosted by the Museo Reale di Storia Naturale in Florence (now the Museo di Storia Naturale dell’Università). The first president was Adolfo Targioni Tozzetti and several famous entomologist, such as Giovanni Battista Grassi, Antonio Berlese, Filippo Silvestri and Guido Grandi, were members of the Council.

In 1922 the Society was transferred to the present location in Genoa, hosted by the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale “G. Doria”. In 1936, the Society was established as an “Ente Morale”.

The Società Entomologica Italiana is the only national society devoted to entomology in Italy. It is a non-profit scientific society for the promotion of entomological and natural history culture and for the improvement of basic and applied research on insects.

The main activity is the publication of two periodicals: the “Bollettino della Società Entomologica Italiana”, Bollettino e Memorieissued three times per year since 1869, containing original scientific papers, short monographs, book reviews and society news; and the “Memorie della Società Entomologica Italiana”, published annually since 1922, containing larger monographs and systematic reviews. The two periodicals are sent to all members of the Society (nearly 700) and exchanged for other similar periodicals (nearly 400) with major museums and scientific institutions in Italy and abroad.

The Library of the Società Entomologica Italiana - located in Genoa at Corso Torino 19/4 - houses over 400 periodicals, 1100 monographic volumes and more than 7000 publications of entomological miscellanea.
